Parliamentary Majority is not manufactured in Parliament – Bawumia to NDC
Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has addressed the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the recent developments in Parliament, emphasizing that parliamentary majority is determined at the polling station level, not “manufactured” in Parliament.
On October 17, 2024, the Speaker of Parliament declared four seats held by MPs contesting the 2024 elections on different party tickets as vacant, briefly tipping the balance of power and granting the NDC majority status. However, within a day, the Supreme Court granted an application by the NPP for a stay of execution on the Speaker’s decision, returning the majority status to the NPP pending the substantive case.
Speaking at a campaign event in Nkawkaw, Dr. Bawumia mocked the NDC for holding what he called a “24-hour majority” in Parliament, calling it the shortest-lived majority in history. He underscored that a parliamentary majority is won through elections at the constituency level, not through parliamentary maneuvers.
“They held the majority for just 24 hours. The shortest-lived majority I know of in history,” Dr. Bawumia remarked, adding, “If they want a majority, they should come to the polling station. You don’t sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself.”
Dr. Bawumia expressed confidence that the NPP is on track to secure a “decisive majority” in Parliament during the December 2024 elections, highlighting his extensive campaign efforts across over 200 constituencies. He encouraged the party’s supporters to remain united and work hard for victory in December, assuring them that if current trends continue, the NPP will win convincingly.
“We will meet them at the constituencies and at the polling stations,” he stated. “By midnight on December 7, the NPP will have a decisive majority in Parliament.”
