Ghana to Introduce Law Against Misinformation and Disinformation
📍 Accra, Ghana – April 11, 2025 – Ghana’s Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that a bill targeting misinformation and disinformation will soon be presented to Parliament for debate and approval.
Key Highlights of the Bill
🔹 The bill aims to curb the spread of fake news across all platforms.
🔹 It does not criminalize criticism of the government.
🔹 It seeks to hold individuals accountable, regardless of political affiliation.
💬 “Irrespective of your political colour, if you engage in peddling fake news, the law will deal with you,” Sam George stated during an exclusive interview on TV3 with Roland Walker.
The Need for Legislation
📌 Speaking at a press conference earlier in the week, Sam George emphasized the urgent need for a legal framework to tackle misinformation.
📌 He cited recent instances in Parliament where altered images and manipulated content misled legislative discussions.
📌 He referenced the case of Oliver Bakavomawa, whose invitation by the Appointments Committee was allegedly based on a doctored social media post.
📌 “In the past one week, this House has carried out business on two occasions on the back of misinformation,” he noted.
Cracking Down on Fake News
The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing misinformation, warning that individuals who deliberately spread falsehoods will face legal consequences.
💬 “It’s important that we take misinformation and disinformation seriously and deal with it once and for all. We must crack the whip and ensure offenders face the full rigours of the law.”
