President Mahama Calls for Economic Self-Sufficiency at Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary

Accra, March 6, 2025 – President John Dramani Mahama has urged a fundamental shift in Ghana’s economic approach, calling for self-sufficiency and an end to reliance on foreign aid and IMF bailouts.

Speaking at the 68th Independence Anniversary celebration in Accra, President Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s continued dependence on imports, donor aid, and financial assistance from external agencies undermines the essence of true independence.

“Proclaiming self-reliance while marching straight back to donors, begging bowl in hand, is meaningless,” Mahama declared.

Key Economic Policies to Drive Self-Sufficiency

To achieve economic independence, Mahama outlined several key policy initiatives:

1. 24-Hour Economy Programme

  • Aims to ensure continuous economic activity to boost production and create jobs.
  • Expected to enhance exports, reduce dependence on imports, and strengthen domestic trade.

2. $10 Billion Big Push Initiative

  • Focused on modernizing infrastructure, stimulating local industries, and creating jobs.
  • Designed to reduce reliance on foreign investment for development projects.

3. Agricultural Transformation

  • Feed Ghana Programme to boost mass food production and cut down on food imports.
  • Poultry Farm to Table Initiative to reduce Ghana’s 95% dependence on imported poultry products.
  • Plans to cut the country’s $2 billion annual food import bill.

Call to Action for Young Ghanaians

President Mahama urged young people to seize opportunities in the economy, stressing that policies alone cannot transform the nation without action.

“Young Ghanaians must step up to the plate, seize these opportunities, and contribute to building a self-sufficient nation.”

His administration’s efforts are geared toward building a Ghana that thrives on its own resources, reducing external financial dependency, and creating a truly independent economy.
