President John Dramani Mahama has suggested the possibility of privatizing the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a solution to inefficiencies within the country’s power distribution system.
During a meeting with a World Bank delegation on January 8, 2025, Mahama stressed that involving the private sector in ECG’s management could help tackle persistent issues such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery.
Reflecting on Ghana’s involvement in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his time as Vice President, Mahama highlighted the critical role of energy distribution in driving national development. He noted that privatization could be a part of a larger strategy to modernize the energy sector and meet Ghana’s growing electricity demands.
“If we don’t fix the Electricity Company of Ghana, we will continue to have a major problem with our whole power value chain. Bringing in private sector efficiency is something that we want to take up again,” Mahama stated.
The President assured stakeholders that any move towards privatization would involve extensive consultations to ensure public interest is protected while enhancing ECG’s performance. The government plans to collaborate with the World Bank to access technical expertise for the proposed reforms.
This initiative forms part of the Mahama administration’s broader efforts to address Ghana’s energy challenges and ensure a reliable power supply to sustain economic growth.
