Inauguration of 9th Parliament will be smooth and peaceful – Planning Committee
Smooth Transition Promised as Ghana Prepares to Inaugurate 9th Parliament
The Planning Committee for the dissolution of the 8th Parliament and the inauguration of the 9th Parliament has assured Ghanaians of a peaceful and orderly democratic transition.
The 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic will officially dissolve on Monday, January 6, 2025. Following this, Members of the 9th Parliament will convene at 11:00 PM to elect a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers.
Addressing the media, Camillo Pwamang, Deputy Coordinator of the Dissolution and Inauguration Committee and Deputy Clerk of Parliament, highlighted the importance of this transition in fortifying Ghana’s democracy.
“This forthcoming transition is yet another milestone in this proud tradition, and we are determined to shepherd it seamlessly and with the highest regard for constitutional and procedural propriety,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for inclusivity, transparency, and unity during this period, noting that it was an opportunity to strengthen the foundations of Ghana’s democracy and enhance the integrity of parliamentary processes.
Fair Election of Speaker Promised
Gifty Twum Ampofo, Chairperson of the Planning Committee, assured the public of their commitment to a fair and transparent election process for the Speaker of Parliament.
“This election, scheduled for January 6, 2025, is pivotal as it will set the tone for legislative leadership in the upcoming term. We are actively collaborating with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the process is conducted fairly and transparently,” she said.
Presidential Inauguration on January 7
In addition to the parliamentary transition, the presidential inauguration will take place on January 7, 2025. Twum Ampofo encouraged Ghanaians to participate in this historic occasion, which she described as a celebration of Ghana’s enduring democratic values and a moment to welcome new leadership.
The committee reiterated its commitment to ensuring that these events symbolize Ghana’s dedication to democratic principles and national unity.
