Stonebwoy warn social media bullies, featured songs with Odumodu black and Duncan Mighty
In an interview with BBC Pidgin, Ghanaian Afro-dancehall artist Stonebwoy called for celebrities to begin suing individuals who defame them on social media. He explained that people often make damaging statements online without evidence, which negatively affects celebrities’ reputations. Stonebwoy believes that legal actions would make individuals more cautious about spreading false information.
Referring to recent online exchanges between musicians like Wizkid and Davido, Stonebwoy agreed with the sentiment that artists should collaborate rather than publicly criticize each other. “Collaboration is essential for industry growth,” he said, sharing his own experience with online negativity and his belief that unity among creatives is vital.
Stonebwoy recently released his sixth studio album, Up and Running, which he describes as a blend of his musical influences, including Afrobeat, reggae, hip-hop, and R&B. This album follows his successful 2023 release, Fifth Dimension, which featured artists like Grammy-winner Angelique Kidjo. The new album includes collaborations with international artists like Wyclef Jean and Duncan Mighty, with whom Stonebwoy had long sought to work.
Highlighting the importance of African unity, Stonebwoy recalled a recent event in New York where he joined Davido on stage to discuss African collaboration in the industry. They previously collaborated on the hit song “Activate” and plan to continue working together to strengthen this connection.
Regarding the Grammy Awards’ recent plans to expand into Africa and the Middle East, Stonebwoy expressed enthusiasm, noting that Grammy recognition could significantly impact African artists. He emphasized the importance of recognizing contributions from various generations of Ghanaian musicians and suggested that his work should also be acknowledged in discussions of Ghana’s music evolution.
