Gov’t Reserves 60% of National Apprenticeship Programme Slots for Women, 15% for Persons with Disabilities

ACCRA, Ghana – April 29, 2025 — Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment, George Opare Addo, has announced a major push for inclusivity in the ongoing National Apprenticeship Programme, with 60% of all training slots reserved for women and 15% for persons with disabilities.

Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Opare Addo emphasized that the programme aims to bridge opportunity gaps and address long-standing employment inequality, especially among marginalized groups.

“Women are a key component of what we are doing because they are mostly a marginalized group. Therefore, we are reserving a percentage of applications for women. We hope to achieve a maximum of 60% of the total applications from women and 15% for people living with disabilities,” he explained.

While men are not excluded, the Minister encouraged greater participation from women and persons with disabilities to ensure wider representation. The initiative will also cater to vulnerable groups including individuals from illegal mining areas (galamsey enclaves) and those undergoing rehabilitation from drug abuse, offering them a fresh start through skills acquisition.

“We welcome applications from men, but we hope to see more women apply so that everyone is well represented,” he said.

Launched on March 19, the National Apprenticeship Programme is being rolled out by the National Youth Authority (NYA). It aims to equip young Ghanaians with practical, vocational skills to foster employability, reduce unemployment, and promote economic self-sufficiency.

This latest move signals a clear government commitment to inclusive development, ensuring that no demographic is left behind in the drive toward national transformation.
