In a deeply symbolic and moving procession, Pope Francis’s coffin was transferred from Casa Santa Marta, his residence, to the Basilica. Cardinals accompanied the journey, while crowds—some in tears, others applauding—lined the path, reflecting the Pope’s global impact.

A long line has already begun to form outside the Basilica as people from all walks of life wait to pay tribute before his funeral on Saturday. Among the early mourners were newlyweds Luis and Macarena, who had traveled to Rome in hopes of receiving the Pope’s blessing. Instead, they found solace in being present at this historic moment.

“I think we received the blessing from above,” said Luis, speaking to the BBC.

The rites carried out today are part of a series of traditions the Catholic Church observes following the passing of a Pontiff. Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first Pope from the Americas and known for his deep compassion, progressive stances, and unwavering call for humility and care for the marginalized.

As the world continues to mourn, coverage of the vigil and farewell ceremonies will continue, with thousands expected to visit St. Peter’s Basilica in the coming days.
