IGP Reshuffles Police Commanders in Galamsey Zones as Crackdown Intensifies

ACCRA, April 22, 2025 — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has launched a major reshuffle of Police Commanders stationed in illegal mining (galamsey) hotspots, marking a significant escalation in the Ghana Police Service’s campaign against the destructive activity.

The shake-up, which affects Divisional and District Commanders mainly in the Eastern South, Western, and Western North regions, is part of a broader plan to infuse new energy, oversight, and accountability in the war on galamsey.

In a statement issued by the Police Service, the IGP reaffirmed his “relentless war” on illegal mining, warning that the reshuffle is only the first phase of many more changes to come.

“This reshuffle is part of a broader effort to ensure more effective policing in areas plagued by illegal mining,” the statement read.

Major Breakthrough in Samreboi Operation

The Police Service also announced a significant breakthrough in its anti-galamsey operations following a four-day intelligence-led raid that began on April 17, 2025, within the Samreboi enclave in the Western Region.

The operation led to the arrest of 47 suspects involved in illegal mining activities along the Tano River and inside the Aboi, Subri, and Nimiri Forest Reserves.

Suspects Arrested:

  • 39 Ghanaians
  • 8 Chinese nationals
  • 4 women

Items Retrieved During the Operation:

  1. 17 excavators
  2. 1 bulldozer
  3. 4 motorbikes
  4. 2 Toyota Hilux vehicles
  5. 1 Toyota RAV4
  6. 4 pump-action guns
  7. 1 single-barrel gun
  8. 54 live BB cartridges
  9. 8 pumping machines

All suspects are currently in custody and will be prosecuted according to Ghanaian law.

This intensified approach reflects the government’s growing resolve to tackle illegal mining, which has devastated forest reserves, contaminated water bodies, and stirred public outrage.

The reshuffle and arrests are expected to bolster public confidence and further deter illegal miners as national enforcement agencies step up their collaborative efforts.
