Ghana Needs $25 Million for Vaccines Amid Declining Donor Support – Health Minister

ACCRA, April 14, 2025 — Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has revealed that the country will require at least $25 million this year to procure essential vaccines, as international donor support for the health sector continues to wane.

Speaking during a meeting with the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, Mr. Akandoh expressed deep concern about the financial gap created by the gradual withdrawal of traditional health sector partners. He pointed specifically to the lingering effects of funding cuts initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which significantly reduced USAID’s support for Ghana’s supply of essential drugs and broader healthcare needs.

“It is instructive to note that at this point in time, our partners who assist us in procuring most of our vaccines are gradually fading,” he said. “This year alone, we need not less than $25 million to import vaccines into this country.”

The Minister emphasized the urgency of the situation, warning that the country may be forced to rely entirely on domestic financing for vaccine procurement and distribution unless new funding sources are secured. His remarks highlight the growing pressure on the government to sustain critical immunization programs amid global funding shortfalls and rising healthcare costs.

Health sector stakeholders, including the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, are now calling for innovative strategies to mobilize local resources, strengthen domestic pharmaceutical production, and improve vaccine financing frameworks to ensure long-term sustainability.
