President Mahama Assents to Bill Abolishing Betting Tax, E-Levy, and Other Levies

Accra, Ghana – April 3, 2025 – President John Mahama has officially signed into law amendments that repeal several contentious taxes, including the betting tax, E-Levy, and emissions tax.
This comes after Parliament formally repealed the levies on March 26, 2025, following the presentation of a Legislative Instrument (LI) by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.
Key Tax Repeals
The abolished levies include:
- E-Levy (1.5% charge on electronic transactions)
- Betting tax
- Emissions tax
- Other levies deemed burdensome on businesses and individuals
The move fulfills one of Mahama’s major campaign promises and aims to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians while stimulating economic growth.
Public Reaction
The repeal of the E-Levy, introduced in 2022 by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, has been widely welcomed by individuals and businesses.
Many Ghanaians had criticized the tax for hindering digital transactions and increasing financial strain, particularly for small businesses and mobile money users.
Economic Impact
With these levies now abolished, economic analysts predict:
- Increased use of mobile money and electronic transactions
- Higher disposable income for citizens
- Enhanced business operations, particularly in the digital and betting sectors
The Finance Ministry is expected to outline alternative revenue measures to offset any fiscal shortfalls caused by the repeals.
