Lawyer for Former NSB Director-General Protests Detention Conditions

Accra, March 25, 2025Samuel Atta Akyea, legal counsel for Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau (NSB), has accused the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) of denying him the opportunity to properly consult with his client and his wife, Angela Boateng, following their recent arrest.

His concerns come after Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, alleged at a press conference on Monday, March 24, that Adu-Boahene was arrested in connection with a $7 million cyber defense system contract, which had allegedly been diverted into his private account.

Detention and Legal Concerns

Adu-Boahene and his wife remain in EOCO custody, a situation Atta Akyea argues violates their legal rights. Speaking on Citi Prime News on Tuesday, March 25, the lawyer described their treatment as unfair and a breach of due process.

According to him, Adu-Boahene was arrested on Thursday, March 20, and his wife was taken into custody the next day when she voluntarily visited EOCO to check on her husband.

“A common thief will run away after her husband has been arrested. She will not walk into harm’s way. They have since been incarcerated.”

Atta Akyea further alleged that when he attempted to consult with his clients, he was told that the interrogation could only take place in the presence of prosecutors, a move he described as a violation of lawyer-client confidentiality.

“They said no, they will not permit me to interrogate them unless they [prosecutors] are seated in the interrogation. So I violated the lawyer-client confidentiality. I told them, No, I will not do that.”

He added that while attempting to escalate the matter to EOCO’s leadership, the Attorney-General was simultaneously addressing the media, discussing the case in a manner he deemed prejudicial.

Adu-Boahene’s legal team is expected to file a formal complaint challenging the conditions of their detention, as the case continues to unfold.
