Accra, April 1, 2025 – Former Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul has raised serious concerns about the security infrastructure at Tema Port, following revelations that over 1,357 containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have gone missing.
Shocking Audit Findings
📦 An independent audit of ECG’s uncleared containers at Tema Port revealed alarming discrepancies:
- ECG originally had 2,491 containers filled with cables and essential equipment.
- However, only 1,134 containers were accounted for.
- A staggering 1,357 containers remain unaccounted for.
Illegal Smelting Operations Uncovered
⚠️ Investigators uncovered an illegal operation at an aluminium smelting facility in Shai-Osudoku, where stolen ECG cables had been:
🔹 Melted into blocks
🔹 Processed into aluminium rods
🔹 Prepared for export
Nitiwul’s Outrage in Parliament
💬 Addressing Parliament, Dominic Nitiwul strongly criticised Tema Port’s security, stating:
🗣️ “Containers do not have legs, they do not have wings to fly. Nobody can carry a 40-foot container. How is it possible that all the security people there, it doesn’t matter what time, and then these containers just disappear?”
⚠️ He further raised concerns about possible larger-scale criminal activities at the port:
🔎 “If containers can go missing, imagine what else is being smuggled – explosives, drugs, and other illegal items.”
Call for Urgent Security Reforms
🚨 The incident has sparked nationwide concerns over:
✅ Port security loopholes
✅ Potential collusion between officials and criminals
✅ Need for stricter monitoring and audits
The government is under pressure to tighten security at the port and bring perpetrators to justice.
