Lorry Fares to Increase by 20% from March 17 – Alliance of Drivers Ghana

Accra, Ghana – March 2025 – The Alliance of Drivers Ghana has announced a 20% increase in lorry fares, set to take effect on Monday, March 17, 2025.

The drivers’ association attributes the hike to rising fuel prices and the increasing cost of vehicle maintenance, including spare parts and engine oil.

Fuel Price Hike and Operational Costs

In a press statement issued on March 13, 2025, the association emphasized that the surge in fuel prices—from GH₵12.99 to GH₵16.23 per litre—has made it unsustainable for drivers to maintain current fares.

📌 “All indications show that fuel prices, spare parts, car prices, and engine oil prices continue to rise gradually,” the statement noted.

The drivers stressed that, as self-employed individuals, they do not receive government support and must adjust fares to sustain their livelihoods.

📌 “How can we go to work and come back home empty-handed? We are not receiving pay from the government. We manage ourselves to take care of our families, but every time we go to work, we return home with nothing,” the statement added.

Call for Public Understanding

The Alliance of Drivers Ghana urged both drivers and passengers to take note of the fare increment, expressing hope that commuters would understand the necessity of the decision.

The statement was signed by:
George Baffuor Owusu Afriyie – General Secretary
William Opoku Asare – Deputy National P.R.O
Mr. Ishmael – National Organiser
Kwaku Boateng – National P.R.O

Commuters across the country are now bracing for higher transport costs, while transport operators insist the increase is long overdue.
