Early Power Threatens to Cut Electricity Supply Over ECG’s $48.2 Million Debt

Accra, Ghana – February 28, 2025

Ghana’s power sector faces renewed uncertainty as Early Power, an independent power producer, has threatened to suspend electricity supply due to the Electricity Company of Ghana’s (ECG) failure to settle a $48,215,405.89 debt.

In a letter to the Acting Managing Director of ECG on Friday, February 28, 2025, Early Power expressed deep concern over ECG’s payment default, revealing that $47,249,898.93 of the total amount is overdue.

The letter, which was also copied to the Minister for Finance, the Minister for Energy, the Executive Secretary of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), and the Board Chairman, warned of severe financial consequences if ECG fails to clear the debt.

“As a result of ECG’s default in payment, the Seller finds itself in a precarious financial position and will not be able to meet its debt service obligations and operating costs,” Early Power stated.

The company demanded immediate payment of the overdue amount, setting a strict deadline of February 28, 2025.

Early Power further warned that failure to meet this deadline would leave them with no choice but to invoke remedies under the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and the Power Compact Operations Agreement (PCOA)—which could result in a halt in power supply.

The development adds to the growing concerns over ECG’s financial struggles, as Ghana battles power supply stability issues and mounting debts in the energy sector.
