Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – February 17, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to see government appointments not just as a mark of recognition but as a serious responsibility to deliver results for the people.
Speaking during an engagement with the Ghanaian community in Ethiopia, Mahama addressed the growing anticipation around government appointments, particularly the issuance of the “green letter”, which confirms an individual’s selection for public office.
Leadership Comes with Accountability
Mahama emphasized that those who accept public office must be ready to be held accountable, as their roles are tied to public trust and expectations.
“Those of us in leadership must lead by example. We must be prepared to be held accountable for taking the public trust. If you accept to serve in the public sector, then you must be prepared to answer to the people because it is the people who took you there—you serve at their pleasure.”
He further stressed that while past administrations must be held accountable, the current leadership must also be prepared for scrutiny.
“The green letter comes with a lot of responsibility and expectation. While we hold those who came before us accountable, we should remember that we are also going to be held accountable.”
Key Priorities: Constitutional Amendments, Economic Stabilization, Youth Employment
Mahama also reiterated his government’s urgent focus on:
- Amending the constitution to enhance governance and accountability.
- Stabilizing the economy to address inflation, debt, and currency depreciation.
- Creating employment opportunities for the youth to secure Ghana’s future.
“We may not be able to complete that process, but at least I am determined that we lay the foundation and put Ghana on the right track.”
His remarks come at a time when public expectations are high, with many eagerly awaiting government appointments and policy implementations.
