Centre for Democratic Movement Demands Revocation of Dr. Johnson Asiama’s Appointment as Acting BoG Governor

The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has urged President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Dr. Johnson Asiama as Acting Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) over unresolved allegations linked to Ghana’s financial sector crisis.
CDM argues that Dr. Asiama’s previous legal troubles make his appointment questionable, raising concerns about ethical governance and the credibility of the central bank.
Dr. Asiama was among nine individuals charged in connection with the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, facing accusations of:
- Fraudulent breach of trust
- Money laundering
- Conspiracy to commit a crime
- Violations of the Bank of Ghana Act
Although charges against him were dropped, the movement insists that his appointment undermines public trust in Ghana’s financial institutions.
The group warns that retaining Dr. Asiama as Acting Governor could:
- Weaken investor confidence in Ghana’s financial sector
- Undermine international trust in the country’s commitment to financial reforms
- Create political backlash over perceived favoritism in high-profile appointments
If President Mahama does not revoke the appointment, CDM has vowed to petition the European Union Representative in Ghana, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the World Bank to seek international intervention.
CDM maintains that restoring trust in Ghana’s financial institutions requires merit-based appointments, free from any perceived political or ethical concerns.
