I’m a practicing Muslim, but I qualify to lead NLA – Abdul-Salam to religious critics
The newly appointed Acting Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Mohammed Abdul-Salam, has addressed concerns about his religious background following his appointment. Abdul-Salam, a practising Muslim, stressed that his selection was based on competence rather than religious affiliation, reflecting Ghana’s secular governance principles.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on January 17, 2025, Abdul-Salam described his appointment as “exciting” and responded to criticism regarding the compatibility of his faith with his new role.
“I am a practising Muslim. I’m not just a Muslim; I am a practising Muslim, but I’m not a fanatic leader. Neither am I an extremist,” Abdul-Salam stated. Addressing comparisons to his predecessor, Sammi Awuku, he noted, “My predecessor is a Christian; I don’t know which part of Christianity allows for a Christian to assume that office.”
Defending His Appointment
Abdul-Salam reiterated that Ghana’s constitution ensures a separation of religion and governance. “Ghana is a secular state. Institutions of state are supposed to be manned by people deemed to be competent to do so,” he emphasized.
He further defended his appointment, expressing confidence in President John Dramani Mahama’s judgment. “The appointing authority deems it fit that Mohammed Abdul-Salam, at this particular point in time, can man the National Lottery Authority. There should be no controversy about that,” he said.
On Religious Consistency
Responding to questions about religious principles and his role at the NLA, Abdul-Salam argued that no one is above reproach in their faith. “Almighty Allah is the forgiver of sins… I cannot find any Muslim under the sun who can stand anywhere and tell me, ‘Oh, piety is to the extent that I have never sinned against my God.’”
Leadership Transition at NLA
Abdul-Salam’s appointment follows the resignation of Sammi Awuku, who stepped down on January 13, 2025, after being elected as the Member of Parliament for Akuapem North. Abdul-Salam now assumes the role of Acting Director-General, tasked with steering the NLA through its next chapter.
The appointment highlights the government’s emphasis on competence in governance while reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to secularism amidst its diverse religious landscape.
