Heavy Security Presence at Ashanti Region Council of State Re-election

A heavy security presence at the Ashanti Region Council of State re-election led to dramatic scenes as several prominent political figures were denied entry for lacking accreditation.

Among those turned away by police were:

  • Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum – Former Education Minister
  • Henry Kwabena Kokofu – Former Bantama MP
  • Kingsley Nyarko – Kwadaso MP
  • Kennedy Agyapong – Former Assin Central MP

Strict Security Measures Enforced

Security officers at the venue insisted that only accredited individuals, specifically assembly members eligible to vote, were permitted inside. The politicians complied with the directive and left without incident, Citi FM’s Ashanti Regional Correspondent, Hafiz Tijani, reported.

Authorities mounted barriers and stationed a water cannon at the venue to ensure order. Earlier, one person was arrested after chaos erupted on the election grounds.

Saaka Abuba Wins North East Region Re-election

Meanwhile, in the North East Region, Saaka Abuba has emerged victorious in the Council of State re-election, securing his position as the region’s representative.

The election, held on Monday, February 17, 2025, saw Abuba clinch 7 out of 12 votes, defeating his closest contender, Asabigi San Malunga, who secured 5 votes.

The rerun was necessitated by a tie in the initial election, where both contenders secured six votes each. The Electoral Commission organized the second round to determine a clear winner, conducting the process under tight security and strict electoral guidelines.

Ashanti Region’s Election Rerun Underway

Similarly, the Ashanti Region’s Council of State election is also undergoing a rerun after disruptions in the initial process resulted in no clear winner being declared. Security measures remain heightened to prevent further incidents.
