Patrick Yaw Boamah Declared Winner of Okaikwei Central Parliamentary Seat

Patrick Yaw Boamah, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, has been declared the winner of the constituency with 21,099 votes. He defeated Baba Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who garnered 19,368 votes.

This declaration comes after a High Court ruling directed the Electoral Commission (EC) to complete the collation of results for four constituencies: Okaikwei Central, Tema Central, Ablekuma North, and Techiman South, by January 6, 2025.

Tema Central Constituency Results Finalized

In Tema Central, Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was confirmed the winner following the inclusion of results from two previously outstanding polling stations. Forson secured 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating NDC’s Ebi Bright, who received 18,815 votes, while Frederick Aniagyei polled 209 votes.

The total valid votes for Tema Central were 37,894, with 144 ballots rejected, bringing the overall votes cast to 38,038.

High Court’s Mandamus Ruling

The court’s directive followed mandamus applications filed by NPP candidates to compel the EC to finalize incomplete collation processes. Presiding judge Justice Forson Agyapong emphasized the legal basis for granting mandamus applications, requiring proof of a public duty’s failure and resulting prejudice.

In the case of Okaikwei Central, the court found that the EC had declared results based on only 110 of the 141 polling stations, leaving 31 stations unaccounted for. Justice Agyapong ordered the inclusion of these missing results before a final declaration could be made.

Ensuring Electoral Accuracy

Similar rulings were issued for the other constituencies, including Ablekuma North and Techiman South, where incomplete results had also been declared. The judge’s decision ensures that all outstanding polling station results will now be incorporated into the final tallies, promoting accuracy and fairness in the electoral process.

These developments highlight the importance of transparency and thoroughness in Ghana’s electoral system as the nation approaches the inauguration of its 9th Parliament.
