Bossman Asare rejects calls for removal of EC officials

EC Deputy Chairperson Defends Commission Amid Calls for Officials’ Removal

Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, has rejected calls for the removal of EC officials, stating that such demands stem from a lack of understanding of the Commission’s achievements since 2020.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News, Dr. Asare highlighted the EC’s dedication to transparency, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in managing Ghana’s elections, emphasizing its global recognition.

“There are laws in this country, and since the Commission took over in 2018, there have been numerous observers, both domestic and international. The results are publicly available, and in terms of quality, Ghana is among the best in Africa when it comes to elections,” he remarked.

He defended the EC’s decisions in overseeing the 2024 elections, including the re-collation of results in key constituencies such as Techiman South and Nsawam Adoagyiri. Despite criticism, he maintained that the re-collation process adhered to constitutional mandates, ensuring accuracy in the declared results.

Dr. Asare also dismissed claims of inefficiency, pointing to the internationally acclaimed 2020 election as evidence of the EC’s capabilities. “If anyone is calling for the removal of someone at the EC, it means they don’t fully understand the work that has been done. The EC has been transparent, cost-efficient, and has done a lot for the country.”

Regarding the controversies surrounding the 2024 elections, including suspended results in constituencies like Dome Kwabenya, he reiterated that legal avenues are available for those dissatisfied with the EC’s actions.

“The EC has been transparent and constitutional. If anyone disagrees, they are free to seek redress through the courts,” Dr. Asare stated, reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to upholding Ghana’s democratic principles.

The EC’s decisions, particularly in re-collating results in nine constituencies, have sparked debates, but Dr. Asare insists that the Commission’s actions are aimed at safeguarding electoral integrity.
