Canadian High Commissioner Urges Timely Payments to International Firms in Ghana
The Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, has raised concerns about delayed payments owed to international companies by Ghana’s outgoing government.
During a meeting with President-elect John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Friday, Montrat emphasized the potential damage such delays could inflict on Ghana’s international reputation and its attractiveness to foreign investors.
“I do think that one of the things that will be helpful is ensuring that companies are being paid on time because that is also another factor that has been a huge deterrent, having to fight to get the money that has been owed,” Montrat noted.
She called on the incoming administration to address the issue promptly, highlighting its significance in maintaining Ghana’s appeal as a destination for foreign businesses and strengthening diplomatic and economic relations.
President-elect Mahama Responds
Acknowledging the High Commissioner’s concerns, President-elect John Dramani Mahama admitted that Canada is not alone in raising the issue.
“You are not the only country to raise the issue of payments. I met the American ambassador, and she also raised payments to international companies that have done work,” Mahama said.
He added that the issue extended beyond domestic firms to include international companies, referencing a list of unpaid American firms provided by the U.S. ambassador. Mahama invited similar input from Canada, pledging to address the challenge as part of efforts to rebuild confidence in Ghana’s economic management.
The meeting underscored the importance of resolving these financial obligations to enhance Ghana’s global business partnerships.
