“IGP is sleeping on the job”- Dep. NPP General Secretary on post-election violence

Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has expressed concern over recent acts of destruction, looting, and violence following the 2024 general elections. Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express, he criticized the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, accusing him of failing to enforce law and order in the post-election period.

Mr. Mohammed alleged that the IGP, who had been actively visible before the elections, had now become inactive. He emphasized that the IGP, as head of the National Security Task Force, is responsible for maintaining peace during and after elections and should report to the president, who chairs the National Security Council.

Condemning the unlawful actions of supporters reportedly aligned with political parties, Mr. Mohammed revealed that the NPP leadership contacted National Democratic Congress (NDC) executives, urging them to call their supporters to order. He cautioned that retaliation by NPP youth could have led to widespread chaos.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has arrested 106 individuals linked to violent incidents involving the destruction of state property. Mr. Mohammed stressed the importance of avoiding such disruptions for national stability.
