U.S. Congratulates Mahama on Presidential Election Victory
The United States has congratulated Ghana’s President-elect John Dramani Mahama on his election to serve as the country’s leader for the next four years, beginning January 7, 2025. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement on December 10, recognizing Ghana’s democratic process and the peaceful, credible elections conducted by the Electoral Commission.
The U.S. commended the efforts of the Electoral Commission, poll workers, security forces, and civil society in ensuring transparency and fairness during the election. Mahama won the presidential race with 56.55% of the votes (6,328,397), defeating Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who garnered 41.61% (4,657,304 votes).
The statement also acknowledged the achievement of Vice President-elect Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s first female vice president, as a significant milestone.
