Swiftly address escalating Bawku conflict – Hassan Ayariga to govt

Hassan Ayariga, the presidential candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Bawku, which has left 21 people dead. Speaking at the National Peace Campaign launch on November 3, Ayariga emphasized the urgent need for government intervention to restore peace, especially with the 2024 elections approaching.

“I can’t sleep because Bawku is at war. Gunshots are everywhere,” he said, highlighting the human cost of conflict. Ayariga urged the government to act swiftly, noting that the issue goes beyond Bawku, affecting national stability. He called on the media, religious leaders, and citizens to actively advocate for peace in Bawku.

Ayariga also shared a personal connection to the conflict, revealing that one of his bodyguards was among the victims of the violence. The unrest has forced schools and businesses to close, disrupting daily life and impacting livelihoods.

The tensions escalated following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had been in exile due to a contested chieftaincy issue. His return has intensified clashes, with recent ambushes on travelers adding to the violence. In response, a 6:00 am to 6:00 pm curfew has been imposed, with security forces enforcing it in an effort to stabilize the area.
