Ghana Freedom Party Leader Akua Donkor dies

Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), passed away on October 28 at Ridge Hospital in Accra. Known for her vibrant personality and deep commitment to grassroots issues, particularly farmers’ and women’s rights, Donkor was a unique and outspoken figure in Ghanaian politics. She began her political journey as an Assemblywoman for Herman and later became a pioneering presidential candidate, undeterred by limited resources and political hurdles.

Her first presidential bid was in 2012 as an independent candidate, though the Electoral Commission disqualified her due to eligibility issues. Despite her disappointment, she backed Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) instead of pursuing legal action. In 2016, Donkor faced another setback when her party’s headquarters was destroyed by fire, leading to another disqualification.

Despite these obstacles, she continued to pursue her vision, and was set to be the third candidate on the ballot for the upcoming 2024 presidential race. Her passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Ghana’s political landscape, as she will be remembered for her unyielding dedication to her cause and her significant impact on grassroots advocacy.
