Organised Labour suspends intended strike on October 10

Organised Labour has suspended its planned strike, which was scheduled for October 10, 2024. The decision came just hours before the strike was set to begin, following a meeting between the leadership of Organised Labour and the government on October 8, 2024.

Several key institutions within the labour group, such as the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), and the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association of Ghana, had already expressed disinterest in joining the strike.

The suspension of the strike follows assurances made by the government during the meeting. The government committed to sending a document to Parliament to revoke L.I. 246(2), which permits mining in forest reserves. Additionally, the government promised to deploy military forces to protect rivers and forest reserves and announced the establishment of 14 courts to handle illegal mining (galamsey) cases.

Organised Labour initially planned the strike to protest the government’s refusal to declare a state of emergency over the environmental destruction caused by galamsey. The government, however, managed to convince the group to hold off on the strike by agreeing to stricter enforcement and by inviting labour to participate in monitoring the new measures being implemented.
