Ghana Meteorological Agency Secures ISO 9001:2015 Certification for Quality and Safety

Accra, Ghana – March 20, 2025 – The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has achieved the ISO 9001:2015 certification, reinforcing its credibility in meteorological services, safety, and disaster preparedness.

The certification, a globally recognized standard for quality management systems, affirms GMet’s commitment to delivering accurate and reliable weather forecasts that meet international best practices.

Strengthening Trust in Meteorological Services

The quality assessment was conducted by Gibson Safety Consult, in collaboration with an international certification group in the UK.

This milestone is expected to enhance confidence among key stakeholders, including the aviation industry, agriculture sector, and emergency response agencies, ensuring more precise weather-related decision-making.

Director-General’s Assurance

Speaking on the achievement, GMet Director-General, Eric Asuman, emphasized the agency’s dedication to excellence in weather forecasting and climate research.

“This certification is not just a piece of paper; it represents our promise to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality meteorological products and services that meet national and international standards,” he stated.

Future Developments and Innovations

GMet is also rolling out new initiatives to enhance meteorological services, including:
Expanding its calibration laboratory to serve regional and international clients.
Renovating an old facility into a state-of-the-art research center.
Introducing the Forecasting African Storms App (FASTA) in collaboration with Leeds University, UK, to improve location-specific forecasts.
Developing a Climate Atlas with the Danish Meteorological Institute to provide long-term climate projections for Ghana (50–100 years).
Pursuing an additional ISO 17025:2017 certification, which focuses on competence in testing and calibration laboratories.

Commitment to Compliance

Dean Moriarty, Consultant and Auditor at Gibson Safety Consult, hailed the achievement as a major milestone, adding that annual re-audits will be conducted to ensure continued compliance with international quality standards.

GMet’s certification positions Ghana as a leader in accurate weather forecasting and climate resilience, ensuring that meteorological services meet global standards for safety and disaster management.
